“And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.” (Mark 1:12)
This stark sentence follows the account of Jesus’ baptism in the Gospel of Mark. In the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, Jesus is either “guided” or “led” into the wilderness after his life- affirming baptismal experience. Why was Jesus driven, led and guided into the wilderness after his baptism? What could this mean for us?
Join us for a day’s prayerful engagement with this remarkable insight into the life of Jesus. We will pay particular attention to the three recorded of statements of Jesus in the wilderness: 1) “The Human Being does not live by bread alone.” 2) “Worship the Holy One only.” 3) “Do not tempt the Lord your God.”
The Gospels tell us: “Jesus left the wilderness full of the power of the Holy Spirit.” This is our shared hope and joy for our day retreat!
Three gathered sessions with shared prayer-worship, an original song or two will bring an ‘open’ approach to our generous personal time.
The closing session of the day will offer the opportunity for the imposition of ashes for all present in recognition of the beginning of the Season of Lent.
All materials shall be supplied. It is recommended that some time be spent with the Gospel accounts of the baptism and wilderness experience of Jesus.
